My Grandfather Jack Cooke Ngala, is a very well respected man of cultural and
traditional ways of the Anmatyerre language group, who paints traditional
paintings that are unchanged from many years ago and belong to ceremonial songs.
He has encouraged me to paint these designs in order to keep our heritage
moving forward. Every time I paint these traditional paintings I feel special
because I know the style and colours of the art are the same as they were
thousands of years ago.
These patterns and designs were decorated onto mens' bodies and shields
during ceremony. The colours are the colours of the Earth. Black, Yellow, Red
and White ochre.
